What is a Deanery?

A deanery, as in a diocese, is a group of
parishes administered by a dean, or in the
Catholic Church, by a priest appointed by the
bishop of a diocese. The 136 parishes of the
Diocese of St. Cloud are divided into seven
deaneries, each with a priest assigned as the
“Dean” or representative of those parishes to the bishop:
Deanery Dean
Alexandria/Morris Fr. Tim Baltes
Fergus Fall/Wadena Fr. Peter Kirchner
Little Falls Fr. Mark Innocenti
Melrose/Sauk Centre Fr. Mark Stang (Fr. Tom Becker during leave)
Cold Spring Fr. Rich Walz
Saint Cloud Fr. Lauren Germann
Foley/Princeton Fr. Kevin Anderson
Each Dean holds meetings to which all priests (both active & retired), parish
staff members, DCCW representative, Diocesan Pastoral Council representative
and deacons are invited to discuss agenda items for upcoming presbyteral
(meaning priest) meeting. This allows the Dean to gather information,
reaction, insight, concerns and vision from each deanery to take and share
with the Presbyteral Council.
So what is a Presbyteral Council?
It is an advisory council to the bishop made up of the deans of all the
deaneries within a diocese. Bishop John Kinney meets with theVicar General
(Fr. Marvin Enneking), the Deans of the seven deaneries and invited
guests regularly to discuss issues that affect the whole of the diocese, i.e.
Sacramental Issues, Liturgical Guidelines, Administrative Issues and Policies,
Mission and Outreach, Education, Vocations, etc. Together with the
bishop this group shapes the vision and sets order to the life of the diocese.
Fr. Gregory and Deb Rudolph attend the Melrose/Sauk Centre Deanery
meetings regularly as representatives of the Five Parish Catholic Community.
At the last meeting there was conversation about how our deanery
would recognize our priests and honor them during this “Year of the Priest”.
What was decided is this; that the priests of the Melrose/Sauk Centre Deanery
would concelebrate Mass a number of times during this year in differing
areas of the deanery. On the days of these Masses, no parish in our deanery
would have a daily Mass, rather, all people of the deanery would be invited
to attend Mass at which all of the priests of our deanery would concelebrate.
The hosting parish would also plan a social to follow. The first of these
Deanery Masses will be:
Thursday, November 19, 2009 ~ 7:30 PM
Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Sauk Centre
Fr. Greg will join his brother priests to concelebrate that Mass and invites
everyone from the five parishes to join him. There will be no daily
Mass in our parishes on that day – mark your calendar, call your friends
and relatives to arrange for carpooling, and make plans to attend this special
Mass in honor of our priests. It is a distance to drive, but will be well worth
the effort as we unite as Christians to thank our God for the gift of our
priests and their chosen vocation to the priesthood!

Pro Life Reflection
Our nation’s laws and the abortion
industry (who profits from these laws)
encourage women to believe “This is my
body”, I can choose to abort my child.
Jesus said “This is my body, given up for
you.” At each consecration, we should
remember that we need to follow Jesus
example of self-giving love and pray for
an end to abortion.
