Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 7, 2010
“...and I will make you fishers of men.”
Luke 5.11
With these words, James, John, Simon and others became disciples
of Jesus Christ. In today’s Gospel according to Luke, Jesus had
begun his active ministry and a crowd of people who believed he was
teaching and speaking the Word of God were now following him. To
be more visible to the crowd Jesus called to Simon and stepped into
his boat. This was the end of the day for these fisherman as they were
completing the washing of their nets. We can imagine that they were
a bit surprised when Jesus told them to go deeper and lower the nets
again.
It is interesting that they did as Jesus asked. It would lead us to
understand that they knew something of this man who was teaching
for they respected him enough to do what he asked of them. Jesus
taught all in actions and few words. James, John and Simon were so
astonished at what they experienced in the miracle of the full nets,
that they gave up their lives as fisherman to follow Jesus.
How are we called to discipleship?
Where do we experience the presence of Jesus?
Jesus came to the disciples by stepping into a smelly, dirty fishing
boat. He comes to us today amid the busyness and messiness of our
lives. How? Where do we see him? Our faith and our Church teaches
that we see Jesus in every person we meet, for all have been created
in God’s image. We are called to discipleship first in our baptism but
then daily in our ordinary lives.
Let us live as true disciples of Christ. Let us teach others about Jesus
and what he sacrificed for us. Let us live in a way that others will witness
Christ in us.
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and all Christians around the
world enter into six weeks of Lent. Let us prepare ourselves and our
families to reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made for us in giving his life
so that all might live.
The insert in this bulletin is meant to invite all members of our
faith community to continue to grow in the knowledge of our faith
and to appreciate the sacrifice Jesus made when he laid down his life
for us all. What a gift!
Parents and grandparents, take time to pray with your children and
grandchildren, teach them the ways of our faith, help them to know
the gift of the Lenten season.
May God bless us all with a holy and sacred Lent.
Blessings,
